Story
North of the Dragon’s Tongue River in the Khador-occupied Thornwood, Trencher Lieutenant William Raddick of the 87th Company finds his mission ruined when his position comes under fire by the Khadorans, undoubtedly thanks to a green long gunner who fired when spooked and alerted the Khadorans. Their original mission was to strike the supply lines and hinder the Khadorans from continuing to fortify the Thornwood. Raddick, with a feeling that no one else has been listening to instructions, decides to hold tight for the moment.
Meanwhile, at Point Bourne, Kara Sloan receives report about the plight of the 87th and is irritated that she has to sit in the city while men die with no warcaster support. Knowing that Point Bourne is safe for the moment, she has her lieutenant assemble the men and prepare her warjacks for a rescue mission. Deciding against disobeying her orders to protect the city, she seeks out her superior Lord General Olan Duggan and asks him for permission. Duggan, although clearly unwilling to send her out, eventually tells her to take the most tactically sound action she feels is appropriate to the circumstance.
Cannon fire sounds eventually reach the 87th army, and Raddick immediately recognises as coming from Sloan's Defenders. Deciding that this is the distraction that he needs, Raddick orders his men to come forward, towards the Khadoran fortress.
Three days later, Victoria Haley rendezvous with Jeremiah Kraye near Stonebridge Castle. She informs him about what might be a singular opportunity to neutralise a major threat, without telling him that the source of her information is her sister Deneghra. Although she doesn't trust her sister, she cannot let such an opportunity pass if it was true.
Deep in the Thornwood, Haley discovers the threat in question as a lich lord, unaware that this one is Morbus. Morbus tells her about her strong resemblance to Asphyxious' puppet, who informed her of his presence. When Morbus tries to evade a volley of fire from Haley's Hunters by dispersing and reforming himself, Haley invokes her ability to slow time, and her perception over the inner workings of machines enables her to identify his very well-disguised phylactery. Taking advantage of her accelerated state, Haley impales Morbus' phylactery with her spear, killing the lich lord for good. Hearing the sounds of approaching Cryxians, Kraye and Haley quickly flee the area. Kraye asks her for explanations, but Haley can't provide any.
