Throatfish
Throatfish are large, amphibious freshwater predators native to the tropical Shattered Spine Islands in southeastern Immoren.
Physical Characteristics
Throatfish resemble nothing so much as a monstrous fusion of toad and primordial fish. While most at home in the water, they are capable of chasing prey onto land using their stumpy legs. Their distended jaws and incredibly wide throats allow them to swallow prey that is almost as large as they are. While they lack true teeth, the boney pads that line their mouths sport bladed ridges that give them excellent traction and crushing power.[1]
Behaviour
Throatfish lurk in warm, silty rivers and marshes. They normally hunt by submerging themselves in the muck, exploding out of hiding when potential prey passes nearby. Smaller prey are swallowed whole, while more stubborn morsel are clamped down and thrashed until it stops moving. Once it’s grabbed onto something, a throatfish rarely releases it, often maintaining a vise-like grip on the target even after death. Creatures more renowned for their stubbornness than their intelligence, throatfish attack whichever prey is nearest.[1]
