Nidoboros, also known as The Favoured,Everflaem, Farsear and the Lord of the Howling Wastes, is a great dragon, a champion of the wyrms, who challenged his father Lord Toruk and was defeated in an attempt to prove to the dragons that their father could be hurt and destroyed.[1]

History

Like the rest of the dragons, Nidoboros was created from a shard of Toruk's athanc. When the rebellious dragons turned on their father, Toruk proved his superiority by defeating all of them, sending them scattering across Caen.[1]

Nidoboros appeared in the 'Beladal Eddas', a series of now-lost poems formerly passed by word of mouth. These poems, dated to 5300 BR to 4800 BR, described Nidoboros consuming several other dragons and growing into a mighty blighted serpent, greater than all others. Some tales of Nidoboros depict it consuming itself in a cycle of destruction and rebirth.[1]

In 1270 BR, Nidoboros confronted Toruk to prove to the other dragons that their father could be harmed. He injured his father in a battle that shook the northern ice and made lakes of mountains, but after a great battle he was eventually cast down. Before Toruk could dig out and consume Nidoboros' athanc, he was forced to flee from several other dragons smelling his blood and converging upon the battlefield. The athanc was secured by Zevanna Agha, the Old Witch of Khador, who sealed it within an elaborate contraption hidden below the Rhulic town of Hellspass, guarded by ogrun and tended by a cabal of dwarf engineers.[1][2]

Nidoboros' athanc was discovered by Lich Lord Malathrax of Cryx in 608 AR, who planned to deliver it to Lord Toruk to increase his standing among the Dragonfather's servants. However, his plan was revealed by Zevanna Agha to Wraith Witch Deneghra, who revealed it to Lich Lord Venethrax, Cryx's master of draconic lore, who proceeded to wrestle all information regarding the athanc from Malathrax.[2]

With an army, Venethrax travels to Hellspass and secures Nidoboros' athanc alongside the machinery containing it. Interrogating the shades of multiple generations of engineers, Lord Exhumator Scaverous is able to devise a massive transport for the athanc, and once it is completed, Venethrax sets out with his prize back to Cryx, accompanied by Malathrax.[2][3]

When passing through the Kovosk Hills in Khador, the athanc convoy is discovered by Lylyth Voassyr, a warlock of the Legion of Everblight. Meanwhile, the convoy attempts to bypass the Thornwood by utilising cephalyx tunnels, but an earthquake invoked by the Circle Orboros delays them, allowing Everblight's forces to catch up to them. Venethrax takes part of the convoy to confront the Legion, while the athanc and the rest of their force is given to Malathrax and Terminus to be escorted to Cryx.[4][5]

In the Wythmoor, on their way to the shady Ordic port of Five Fingers, the athanc convoy fall under attack by the Cygnaran Army. The Cryxians are defeated and Nidoboros' athanc is seized by the Cygnarans. Without realising its true nature, Lord General Coleman Stryker sends the athanc south, to a fortress deep in the Wyrmwall Mountains to be analysed in safety.[5]
